What You Should Know About Dry Eyes

Dry eye syndrome occurs when the tear film of your eye is either not receiving enough tears or if the tears your eyes are producing are of poor quality. There are 3 distinct layers to your tear film: a mucin layer, an aqueous layer, and a lipid (oil) layer.

If any of these layers are insufficient for your eyes’ needs, it can lead to you experiencing dry eye symptoms.

The mucin layer is the layer of your tear film fastened to the surface of your eye. It’s responsible for helping the rest of the tear film spread across the surface of your eye, helping your eye feel comfortable.

The aqueous layer is sandwiched between the mucin and oil layer, and helps keep your eye hydrated. This layer can also help wash away particles that may have ended up on the surface of your eye.

The lipid, or oil, layer seals in the aqueous layer, preventing it from evaporating too fast.

What Causes Dry Eyes?

Some of the most common causes for dry eye can include:

Lumenis Optima IPL

We use a technology called intense pulse light (IPL) therapy, provided by Lumenis, to help treat certain causes of dry eye.

The Lumenis Optima IPL is a 15 minute treatment where your optometrist will use the IPL to target blockages in your meibomian glands, melting them through the gentle light pulses. This helps your meibomian gland provide your tear film with the oils needed to keep your eyes feeling comfortable.

Depending on the severity of your dry eyes, your optometrist may recommend a couple treatment sessions to provide you with the best outcome.
