What is Dry Eye and How Can it be Treated?

If your eyes feel dry and gritty much of the time, and appear red, it's a good idea to make an eye doctor appointment right away. Dry eye disease may feel like you have something in your eye, such as dust or an eyelash, but the feeling continues. There is no way for you to know if you have a vision problem developing, without a thorough exam from your El Paso optometrist.

What is Dry Eye Disease?

Dry eye can be part of an allergic reaction to something irritating in your work, school or home environment and could even be seasonal. Dry eye can also be caused by a physical problem such as eye shape, which sometimes occurs in Asians, for example. Dry eyes can happen due to aging. In addition, dry eye can be a side effect of medication you may be taking or it can be secondary to a disease like rheumatoid arthritis. Your optometrist in El Paso will examine your eyes to determine the cause of your dry eyes and will base your treatment recommendation on those findings.

Dry Eye Treatments

Depending upon the cause of your dry eyes, your El Paso eye doctor may treat you with:

  • Prescription eye drops that help you produce more tears or make tears with higher oil content.
  • Non-prescription artificial tears.
  • Changing your diet or adding supplements like Omega 3 fish oils.
  • Changing to a different type/brand of contact lenses, if you wear them.
  • Tear duct plugs that keep eye moisture from draining away quickly.
  • Lipiflow, a treatment device that uses heat to help clear away clogged glands in your eyelids.
