Pediatric Eye Care at University Vision Centre

Your children are your greatest treasure -- and their eyesight is one of their greatest treasures. The proper coordination of eyes and brain to create optimal vision is a process that requires the eyes to be healthy and functional from infancy onward. That's why your child requires pediatric eye exams and corrective treatment as needed to ensure a safe, healthy and productive early life. Here at University Vision Centre, we're proud to offer a high standard of pediatric eye care for children just like yours.

Your Child's Eye and Vision Challenges

While people often think of vision as purely a function of the eyes, it's important to remember that what we think of as vision is actually the brain processing and interpreting the data it receives from the eyes. This is a skill that must be developed over time, which is why newborns come into the world with limited useful vision. Over the following 6 months, the eyes and brain learn how to work together to provide clear eyesight. But if an ocular health problem or functional abnormality gets in the way, your child's development can suffer in a number of ways. In addition to the obvious vision issues, your child may have trouble with hand-to-eye coordination, balance and other critical areas of growing up. Uncorrected vision problems can also lead to academic problems as your child struggles to read textbooks and blackboards, possibly leading to the misdiagnosis of a learning disorder.

When to Schedule Pediatric Exams and Treatment

Newborn infants get their eyes checked by the pediatrician or family eye doctor just to ensure that there are no obvious health problems; it's not really possible to evaluate visual acuity at this point. The American Optometric Association recommends that you schedule your child's first real pediatric eye exam at the age of 6 months, once the eyes and brain have developed a strong working relationship. We will check to see how well your child's eyes team and track as they follow objects. We also note eye alignment and examine the eye for signs of disease.

The second critical pediatric exam, at 3 years of age, repeats these eye health and eye function checks in more detail, aided by the fact that your little one can now communicate with us. The third major exam needs to occur when your child is about to enter first grade. By this point we're using an eye chart (with either letters or shapes) to determine whether a refractive error such as myopia or hyperopia is affecting your child's vision. If so, we can prescribe corrective lenses and provide your child with fashionable, durable eyeglasses. Older children can also be fitted with contacts.
